My DrakeCopyright 2002 Stan LynessLet me tell you about My Drake, the dashingest drake on the Cove, his head metallic glowing green, his bill bright schoolbus yellow, his collar crisp and white. He quacks away all other drakes, and suffers no quacks back, not he. And when he lifts his head of cold green fire and stands on water - true! - and beats his wings, oh how my heart beats with them. My eggs this Spring were our eggs. A clutch of duckling geniuses we raised. (He helps! He tells them when they're bothersome.) So shall we raise a clutch each year, so in duck love are we, My Drake and me. He glides left, he paddles right, the clever mind unruled by pattern, and I, I swim behind, his shining head - did I mention his head? It's brilliant green - his shining head my guide. |
