Why Geese Are in the GardenCopyright 2003 Stan LynessIn shrouded mist of legend of our nation's history, inflation roared - gas prices soared - before the first PC, and long before Cold War had given way to scorching peace, there were fewer geese. As forebears fought the Soviets to uneasy global truce, an ancestor, unnamed to us, first offering corn to goose, by quiet power of kindness, reaching out with webless hand, forever fowled our land. He found them peaceful creatures who adore our bread and Cheetos, as ancient goose ambassadors found us a gentle people, so charmed by giant flying Vs that would the heavens cleave, back when they would leave. And children that's the legend of Why Geese Are In The Garden and backyard pool of any fool who has not fenced his yard in; why the barefoot must step carefully; and why it is that I'm aware of condescending stares thrown one eye at a time, First with a left-eyed skeptical scowl, "This snow fence should be down by now." Then with the right eye, half-requesting "We now shall take the sun, but will require more seed when we're done resting." |
